Anna Regener began as the first Librarian when The University of Tampa was Tampa Junior College in 1931-1932. In 1933 the Library was moved to the Ballroom, what is now Fletcher Lounge.

Charolotte Anne Thompson (d. 2000), the longest running Director, worked on and off in three iterations of the Library: Fletcher Lounge, the current building as The Merl Kelce Library (1969), and the renamed Macdonald-Kelce Library (1999). She was the first Librarian Emeritus in UT history.

In the late 1970's, Director Lydia Acosta moved the library forward into new automation technologies, setting up the online catalog and paving the way for the advent of the internet.

Under the current Director Marlyn Pethe, The Macdonald-Kelce Library offers over 200 databases and an Institutional Repository, a digitized archive of UT scholarship.
